On 15th March, 2012, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced that China Entry-Exit Inspection & Quarantine Bureaus (CIQ) conducted spot inspection on 14,959 batches of apparel in 2011, of which 1,521 batches (containing 730,000 pieces) with a value of $12,200,000 failed in the inspection. The failure rate was up to 10.2%, and 861 batches were returned or destroyed due to failing safety requirements.
The inspection covered several categories such as infants’ wear, children’s wear, shirts, nightwear and swimming suits. The inspection results showed a high failure rate of safety requirements and fiber composition of the imported garments. Colorfastness, non-conformity of fiber content and pH value accounted for the main failures. Colorfastness mainly failed for coating, flock printing, demin and velvet. Unqualified items also concerned formaldehyde and banned AZO colorants.
The unqualified products were mainly imported from Spain, Italy, Turkey, Korea, India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR, Portugal, U.S.A and Japan.
