The ASTM F1917 – 12 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Infant Bedding and Accessories is a recently revised safety specification published by ASTM International to address safety concerns identified with the popular juvenile products known as infant bedding and their related accessories. Infant bedding and accessories are defined in this standard as:
           “Items intended for use in a nursery: fitted sheets, blankets, dust ruffles, covers and drapes
           for canopies, pillows, mattress covers, diaper stackers, fabric wall hangings, bumper guards,
           headboard bumper guards, and comforters.”

The Challenge:
The ｕｐｄａｔｅd standard, among other things, addresses several safety concerns raised by the infant bedding industry and consumer advocacy groups with regards to crib bumpers and other parts of infant bedding. Key requirements of this revised standard include:

• A maximum allowable length for the attachment means as well as the decorative components of crib bumpers
• A new requirement that limits the thickness of filled crib bumpers by requiring the bumper to be able to pass through a 2” wide test fixture
• Minimum thickness requirements for unsupported vinyl components found in infant bedding and accessories
• A new requirement and test method that evaluates the attachment strength of a crib bumper pad tie to the bumper
• Specific warning text and font requirements for infant bedding products and accessories
