Pursuant to Sparkle Vol. 558, polyamide kitchenware requires three successive migration tests for primary aromatic amines (PAA) to be carried out for all articles intended for repeated use and only the results of the third test are taken. This is based on the provisions in Directive 2002/72/EC and this rule for testing repeated use articles can be based upon until December 31, 2012.
The Challenge:
As of January 1, 2013, the rules under Regulation (EU) No.10/2011 will apply. “These provisions include that only one migration test for PAA will be carried out for all polyamide kitchenware due to the specific migration limit for PAA is "non-detectable”, and hence compliance shall be based on the migration level of the first test.
Products that had previously fulfilled the requirement based on the third migration test results only would now be required to fulfill the requirement based on the first migration test results. This would mean a more stringent requirement for polyamide kitchenware.
